RESOLUTION NO. 960331
Honoring Melanie Thompson for her award winning essay
about her principal, Philomina Harshaw, in the "Kindest Kansas
Citian" essay contest.
WHEREAS, Melanie Thompson has been chosen as one of
the winners, out of 4700 entries, of the Sixth Annual "Kindest Kansas
Citian" essay contest for her essay honoring her principal at George
Washington Carver Latin Grammar Magnet School, Philomina Harshaw; and
WHEREAS, the essay contest is sponsored by STOP
Violence, a Kansas City organization dedicated to the prevention of family
violence and KMBC Channel 9 TV, as part of the Kindest Kansas Citian Awards
Banquet and Maxey Dupree Humanitarian Awards; and
WHEREAS, Melanie, a fourth grader, described Ms.
Harshaw as someone "who cares about you and me and her community",
who "makes me feel like I am someone special", and who "tells
you things that you need to know and hear"; and
WHEREAS, Melanie has displayed not only obvious
writing talent but also maturity and insight in her ability to recognize and
her desire to honor and emulate the positive role model of an educator like Ms.
Harshaw; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That Melanie Thompson is hereby congratulated by the
Mayor and Council for her award-winning "Kindest Kansas Citian"
essay; and further, that Melanie is to be commended on her recognition of the
kindness and contributions of Philomina Harshaw to the children of Kansas City;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be
spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies
hereof be presented to Melanie Thompson and Philomina Harshaw in recognition of
the award-winning essay in the "Kindest Kansas Citian" essay contest.
