Welcoming and honoring the men of
the 4th Infantry Division Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP), Company E
58th Infantry Long Range Patrol (LRP) and Company K 75th Infantry (Airborne)
Ranger and their families at their 40th Anniversary Reunion.
WHEREAS, from June
26-29, 2008, Northland Cathedral will host a Homecoming Reunion for the brave
men who formed the 4th Infantry Division Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol
(LRRP), Company E 58th Infantry Long Range Patrol (LRP) and Company K 75th
Infantry (Airborne) Ranger in the Vietnam Highlands; and
WHEREAS, the
heritage began in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division LRRPs formed within
the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Brigades in 1966 which led to the establishment of
Company E 58th Infantry (LRP) in December 1967; and
WHEARAS, the men
recruited for these elite units were highly motivated and disciplined
volunteers who underwent rigorous training and were inserted deep into enemy
territory in 4-6 man teams to perform extremely dangerous hit-and-run ambushes
and gather battlefield intelligence; and
WHEREAS, in February
1969, the U.S. Army retired the colors of Company E 58th Infantry (LRP) and
transferred them to Company K 75th Infantry (Airborne) Ranger under
the command of Captain Reuben Siverling; and
WHEREAS, Vietnam
was a different kind of war, calling for a different kind of soldier from that
of other wars and some of the most successful examples of the new breed of
fighting men were the members of the LRRPs-Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols-later
designated as the U.S. Armys 75th Rangers; and
WHEREAS, the 75th
Rangers were characterized by perseverance under extreme hardship, heightened
senses, and uncommon bravery and the LRRPs may well have been the most
effective use of manpower in the entire war; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY
THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and
Council hereby welcome and honor the 4th Infantry Division Long Range
Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP), Company E 58th Infantry Long Range Patrol (LRP)
and Company K 75th Infantry (Airborne) Ranger; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Council in
testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Reuben Siverling with
the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the
sacrifices made and brave actions taken which make it possible for us to
continue our lives of freedom.
