RESOLUTION NO. 160587

 

Declaring Saturday, August 13, 2016 as Diane “Mama” Ray’s 30th Anniversary hosting weekly jam sessions in Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, Diane “Mama” Ray is a blues and jazz singer and played the violin and piano at an early age. She performed her first major gig with a military band backed with 2-other vocalist at the Eagle’s Club in Wiesbaden, Germany; and

 

WHEREAS, Diane came to Kansas City from New York in 1962 and became involved in the local jazz and blues scene where she became friends with pianist/vocalist Betty Miller (Abel), who performed with her husband bassist Milt Abel. Betty gave Diane sage advice, “Never give up on your dreams.” By 1986, Diane teamed with organist Rich VanSant and guitarist Tom DeMasters, beginning one of the longest running jam sessions in Kansas City history. “Mama” hosted a jazz and blues jam for 22-years at Harling’s Upstairs and BB’s Lawnside Barbecue since 2008;

 

WHEREAS, a live recording entitled JAM-CD, was made featuring the band and many outstanding musicians. The second recording’s title song “Mama’” Mood, was written by Diane and recorded at BB’s Lawnside Barbecue; and

 

WHEREAS, Diane was an original member of Spirit, KC Blues Festival and Jazz Lover’s Pub Crawl during her career, and a recipient Spirit of KC Jazz Award, Elder Statesmen of KC Jazz, Barbara Potts Award for Hope House, Heritage Musicians Award, and accolades from Governors and cities in the greater metropolitan area. She appeared in the documentary Kansas City Jazz and Blues, Past, Present and Future. Diane is the owner of D. Ray Design and Construction, Inc., with her sons Steven and Sean; and

 

WHEREAS, Diane “Mama” Ray, Jay EuDaly, Allen Monroe, Bree Plaster and Keith Mallory, are currently performing the weekly jam sessions at BB’s Lawnside Barbecue; NOW THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare Saturday August 13, 2016 as Diane “Mama” Ray Band Jam Session Day for 30-years in Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof is presented to Elder Statesmen of KC Jazz, BB’s Lawnside Barbecue, and Jam Session members with appreciation from the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the many years of entertainment to our community.
