RESOLUTION NO. 170138

 

Honoring “The 20th Anniversary of the Turner School of Construction Management in Kansas City”, March 2, 2017 to May 3, 2017.

 

WHEREAS, Turner Construction Company with the establishment of the Turner School of Construction Management (TSCM) 20 years ago has continued to support small-minority, women, disadvantaged, and veteran-owned businesses (MWDVBE), by enabling firms to become more competitive in the marketplace while providing opportunities to participate on key construction projects and serve as subcontracting partners; and

 

WHEREAS, with over 40 offices nationally, Turner Construction Company was established in 1902 in New York City, and opened its Kansas City office in 1988; and

 

WHEREAS, Turner Construction Company is not only recognized as the leading general contractor in the United States, but is widely recognized for showing a true commitment and dedication to the community through multiple diversity and inclusion initiatives, and contribution to the growth and success of local small business by implementing a self-imposed MWDVBE utilization goal of 20% corporate-wide; and

WHEREAS, initiated in 1969, TSCM was developed for Turner Construction Company by New York University to provide college-level training and soon became an opportunity to develop strategic business relationships with MWDVBEs, and since the inception continues to be a free opportunity for MWDVBEs in the disciplines practiced in the construction industry, while graduating over 39,000 nationally and over 700 locally; and

 

WHEREAS, reaffirming a commitment to social and civic responsibility, for the past 11 consecutive years Turner Construction has awarded over $1 billion annually to MWDVBE firms nationally, while awarding well over $500 million to MWDVBEs in the Kansas City metro area; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor and congratulate Turner Construction Company and the Turner School of Construction Management for their commitment to our community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Mark Iammarino, General Manager and Vice-President of Turner Construction Company, and DeJ’on Slaughter, Director of Community and Citizenship of Turner Construction Company, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for their many years of dedicated service and of their best wishes for all the years to come.
