RESOLUTION NO. 050997

Congratulating the Mid-America Coalition on Health Care, the Kansas City Metropolitan Healthcare Council, and the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department for their efforts to make the City a safer place by improving the ability of hospitals to treat heart attacks, pneumonia and congestive heart failure.

WHEREAS, researchers have found dramatic differences exist in the quality of care received at hospitals across the United States. Interestingly, a persons geographic location can be an important factor if they are the victim of heart attack, pneumonia, or congestive heart failure; and

WHEREAS, the Mid-America Coalition on Health Care, the Kansas City Metropolitan Healthcare Council, and the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department collaborated on an effort to assess the quality of hospitals, including cooperation with the Leapfrog Group in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Kansas City began its collaborative two years before Harvard Universitys School of Public Health conducted its national study. As a region, Kansas City ranks third in the nation in two of the tree categories measured by the assessment; and

WHEREAS, Saint Lukes Hospital System, Truman Medical Centers, HCA and St. Joseph Medical Center are working collaboratively with employers, physicians, health plans, and city and county health departments on health care delivery issues; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor, the City Council of Kansas City, the Mid-America Coalition on Health Care, the Kansas City Metropolitan Healthcare Council, and the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department are among the many people and organizations dedicated to improving the quality of care in area hospitals; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council of Kansas City hereby congratulate the aforementioned in their efforts to improve health care in Kansas City, and encourage the continuation of such efforts; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to representatives of the Mid-America Coalition on Health Care, the Kansas City Metropolitan Healthcare Council, and the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department, with the support of the Mayor and Council.
