RESOLUTION NO. 100936

 

Observing Veterans Day and recognizing Jerry Downs.

 

WHEREAS, Veterans Day will be observed throughout the nation on Thursday, November 11, 2010; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City’s many brave and courageous veterans will be honored on Veterans Day at a number of ceremonies, services, and observances; and

 

WHEREAS, November 11 marks the signing of the Armistice ending World War I. The Armistice was signed by Germany at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 ending the major hostilities of the First World War; and

 

WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day in 1919. On November 8, 1954, Congress amended the legislation that made Armistice Day a national holiday and renamed the day Veterans Day; and

 

WHEREAS, Jerry Downs served in the Republic of South Vietnam as a Rifleman with Bravo Company, 2nd Brigade, 327th Battalion, 101st Airborne Division from 1967 to 1968; and

 

WHEREAS, Jerry Downs suffered combat wounds and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism, Combat Infantry Badge, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal; and

 

WHEREAS, Jerry Downs is now a retired I.N.S. Agent where he served for 37 years and now serves his fellow veterans as Commander of Louis A. Craig Post #18 and represents the Veterans of Kansas City on the State and National Level as Commander 4th District; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council do hereby commend and honor our many brave men and women that have served and continue to serve our nation; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Jerry Downs with the encouragement of the Mayor and Council and to all Kansas Citians to join in the observance of this day and thank those who have fought to protect our way of life.
