RESOLUTION NO. 080378

 

Declaring April 19, 2008, as the annual Day Without a Disposable Bag.

 

WHEREAS, each year approximately 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, less than 5 percent of said bags are recycled; and

 

WHEREAS, the indiscriminate littering of plastic bags is an increasing blight problem. Plastic bags create significant litter problems for Kansas Citys streets and animal life; and

 

WHEREAS, the purpose of this project is to raise environmental awareness by reducing disposable bag through reusable bag initiatives, awareness and education to promote habit change in the Kansas City metropolitan area; and

 

WHEREAS, the goal of the project and the memorandum of understanding is to achieve measurable environmental benefits through locally-guided projects, while also contributing to the quality of life of the Kansas City metropolitan citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, if each Kansas City citizen used just one reusable bag, it would have a significant positive impact on the Citys landscape as well as in the Citys petroleum usage and litter control; and

 

WHEREAS, the support of community leaders is important to promote change and achieve substantial environmental benefits in the metro area; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare April 19, 2008, as the annual Day Without a Disposable Bag; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Pryor Leadership Studies Program at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, with the support of the Mayor and Council and urging all citizens of the Kansas City metropolitan area to not use disposable bags on April 19.
