RESOLUTION NO. 150112

 

Declaring Tuesday, March 3, 2015 as Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day.

 

WHEREAS, the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation has designated the third day in March as Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day; and

 

WHEREAS, Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day is the only global event devoted to raising both awareness of TNBC and funds that provide critical support for research efforts for those affected by the disease of which African American, Latina and women under the age of 50 across all racial backgrounds are in the highest percentages; and

 

WHEREAS, locally Darrell Sublett a member of Centennial United Methodist Church and whose children Rasson and Nyla Wofford are Lincoln College Preparatory Academy alumni battled TNBC until her death on Saturday, October 22, 2011; and

 

WHEREAS, Centennial United Methodist Church and Lincoln College Preparatory Academy have committed to increase TNBC awareness by partnering with Surviving the Odds, an organization dedicated to decreasing the mortality rate in women of color due to breast cancer; and

 

WHEREAS, the official partnership kick off will take place on March 1, 2015, during the Centennial United Methodist Church TNBC Prayer Breakfast where the partners will provide information on the disease to initiate the education process; and

 

WHEREAS, the TNBC awareness initiative will begin by educating Centennial’s congregation, Lincoln students, faculty and staff who will become a conduit to getting the word out about TNBC; and

 

WHEREAS, the partners will continue to get the word out about TNBC by hosting both the 4th annual Inspired by Darrell Sublett 5k and the inaugural Lincoln College Preparatory Academy Invitational on Saturday, October 10, 2015; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare Tuesday, March 3, 2015 as Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof is presented to representatives of the aforementioned partners with the Mayor and Council fostering public awareness and understanding of Triple Negative Breast Cancer and encouraging early detection and prompt treatment.
