RESOLUTION NO. 910288

 

Commending United States Air Force Reserve Colonel Garey M. Reeves, Commander of Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base and the 442nd Combat Support Group, on his retirement.

WHEREAS, United States Air Force reserve Colonel Garey M. Reeves, most recently the Commander of Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base and the 442nd Combat Support Group located there, retired February 22, 1991 after 35 years of military service to his country; and

 

WHEREAS, born February 22, 1936 at Arthur, Missouri, he entered the Air Force January 31, 1956 as an aviation cadet, receiving his navigator wings and second lieutenant commission April 19, 1957 at Harlingen Air force Base, Texas. He served there as a primary basic navigator instructor and wing briefing officer until he completed active duty; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1962 Colonel Reeves joined the Missouri Air National Guard, serving as a C-97 Stratofreighter navigator at St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1965 he joined the Air Force Reserve as a member of the 442nd Tactical Airlift Wing at Richards-Gebaur where he served as a C-125 Globemaster and C-130 Hercules navigator and as the wing Director of Operations; and

 

WHEREAS, Colonel Reeves was promoted to Colonel on January 26, 1977, became Commander of the 442nd Combat Support Group on November 1, 1980 and Commander of Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base on October 1, 1980. Under his command Richards-Gebaur was extensively remodeled and upgraded, modified for use as a shared facility with the Kansas City, Missouri Aviation Department and hosted numerous highly successful "Operation Handshake" programs, all while maintaining the combat readiness status of his command; and

 

WHEREAS, a Master Navigator, Colonel Reeves has more than 7,000 hours of lying time in military aircraft. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organization Excellence Award, Combat Readiness Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal with two Service Stars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Small arms Expert Marksmanship ribbon and Republic of vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He resides in Lees Summit, Missouri with his wife, the former Janice Marie Cline. The Reeves have three children, Sandra, Kelli and Marquin; NOW, THEREFORE

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby commend Colonel Garey M. Reeves on the occasion of his retirement from the United States Air Force Reserve; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof, and that copies hereof be presented to Colonel Reeves and to Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base and the 442nd Combat Support Group in token of the appreciation of the Mayor, council and citizens of Kansas City, Missouri for his many years of distinguished service to his country and the cause of world peace.
