RESOLUTION NO. 030211

 

Approving the Kansas City Walkability Plan as a policy guide for increasing transportation choice in Kansas City by providing for direct, continuous, safe, pleasant, and secure pedestrian options throughout the City.

 

WHEREAS, the FOCUS Kansas City Plan recognizes that a direct, continuous, safe, pleasant, and secure pedestrian system is a vital step towards creating a multi-modal transportation system; and

 

WHEREAS, the FOCUS Kansas City Plan recommends the preparation of a Pedestrian Master Plan in order to support a multi-modal transit system and identify pedestrian facilities standards; and

 

WHEREAS, in order to further implement the FOCUS Kansas City Plan and to increase the number of people in Kansas City who choose to walk at least part of the time, the City Development Department contracted with LSA Associates, Inc. to develop a Walkability Plan; and

 

WHEREAS, representatives of key City departments, the Kansas City Area Transit Authority, and the Mid-America Regional Council worked in partnership with community members from all parts of the City to test and refine the Plan; and

 

WHEREAS, the City Plan Commission, on February 18, 2003, unanimously voted to approve the Kansas City Walkability Plan; and

 

WHEREAS, it is considered to be in the community interest to adopt the Kansas City Walkability Plan as a policy guide for increasing transportation choice in Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

Section A. That the Kansas City Walkability Plan is hereby approved as a policy guide for increasing transportation choice in Kansas City by providing for direct, continuous, safe, pleasant and secure pedestrian options throughout the City. A copy of the Kansas City Walkability Plan is on file in the office of the City Clerk under Document No. 030211, and is hereby incorporated herein by reference.

 

Section B. That the Kansas City Walkability Plan is consistent with and complies with the FOCUS Kansas City Plan, adopted on October 30, 1997, by Committee Substitute for Resolution No. 971268, and is adopted as a supplement to the FOCUS Kansas City Plan.
