RESOLUTION NO. 010599

 

Declaring the week of April 22-27, 2001, as National Volunteer Appreciation Week.

 

WHEREAS, this special week is set aside to thank and honor the millions of volunteers who donate time and energy to help their fellow citizens and the causes they believe in. The week also serves to increase public awareness of the critical role that volunteers play in our communities and country; and

 

WHEREAS, this years theme for National Volunteer Appreciation Week is Change the World, Volunteer and sets the stage for the Points of Light Foundation, its partners in the national network of Volunteer Centers and Foundation members to applaud the efforts of volunteers and plan special events and service projects to commemorate the annual week-long event; and

 

WHEREAS, a recent survey conducted by the Gallup Organization for Independent Sector found 56% of American adults reported volunteer work during 1998; and

 

WHEREAS, America was built on the spirit of volunteerism. Without the efforts of millions of volunteers who give their time to help others in their communities, our country would be a different place; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the week of April 22-27, 2001, as National Volunteer Appreciation Week; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Volunteer Committee Members, Anita Maltbia, Denise Phillips, Jean Davis, Brenda Lax, India Bennett, Michelle Denham, Tracey Franklin and Brenda Andrews, in appreciation for all the volunteers making our community a better place to live.
