RESOLUTION NO. 060991

 

Honoring Deputy Chief Vincent Ortega on the occasion of his retirement from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department

 

WHEREAS, Deputy Chief Vincent Ortega of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department is retiring after serving the department and this City for thirty years; and

 

WHEREAS, Vince Ortega began his career in the autumn of 1976 when he was a probationary police officer. He was promoted to police officer shortly after that, and continued to earn significant promotions. He was named Deputy Chief in January 2004; and

 

WHEREAS, during Deputy Chief Ortegas tenure, he has served in various roles in the Central, East and North Patrol Divisions, the Drug Enforcement Unit, the Fraud Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, the Patrol Bureau, the Violent Crimes Division, the Detention Unit, and the Human Resources Division, among others; and

 

WHEREAS, among Deputy Chief Ortegas achievements are the development and implementation of Spanish classes for First Responders, the establishment of the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry for minorities in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, the development of the Truancy Sweep program. Ortega has served on countless task forces and committees. Notable among these are the Governors Commission on Hispanic Affairs, the KC Safe City Initiative, Project Neighborhood (now known as MoveUp), Project Safe Neighborhood Task Force, and the Kansas City Violent Crimes Strategy Initiative. Of particular importance are the diversity issues and topics relevant to Hispanic residents Ortega has championed; and

 

WHEREAS, Deputy Chief Ortegas awards and commendations include the Distinguished Service Award, the Physical Fitness Award, the Good Conduct Award, and multiple Special Unit Citations and Meritorious Service Awards. He has been a truly exemplary officer, and has won the respect of his peers as well as the appreciation of residents he has served so ably; and

 

WHEREAS, Deputy Chief Vincent Ortega has been a remarkable citizen and an officer worthy of imitation and honor; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Deputy Chief Vincent Ortega on the occasion of his retirement from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof, and that a copy hereof be presented to Deputy Chief Vincent Ortega in token of their respect and high regard and their best wishes for a long and happy retirement which he so richly deserves.
