RESOLUTION NO. 051002

 

Congratulating Chief Richard Smokey Dyer, Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department, for receiving the Fire Chief magazine Fire Chief of the Year Award, at the International Association of Fire Chiefs Conference and offering thanks and support for his service to Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, Fire Chief magazine honors the winners of the 10th annual Fire Chief of the Year Awards. The winners are recognized for their longtime dedication and leadership in fire and emergency services; and

 

WHEREAS, Chief Dyer was nominated by the Missouri Valley Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and has served the American fire service for more than 39 years, Dyer has worked with five Missouri fire departments, as well as been Chief Deputy Fire Marshal for the State of Missouri and an assistant professor of fire science at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo. He currently is Director and Chief of the Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department; and

 

WHEREAS, constantly striving to continue his professional development, Chief Dyer has completed the National Fire Academys Executive Fire Officer Program and earned the Chief Fire Officer Designation through the Commission on Fire Service Accreditation. Chief Dyers integrity, morals and strong sense of ethics made him the ideal and logical candidate for the United States Department of Defense appointee to the first Presidential Medal of Valor Review Board, in accordance with the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Act of 2001. For nine years, Chief Dyer served on the Board of the Directors of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, serving as president in 1998 and 1999; and

 

WHEREAS, in nominating Chief Dyer for the award, the Missouri Valley Division Director Chief Steven Westermann wrote, Our nomination of Chief Dyer is due to more than his professional contributionsHe is a compassionate individual, a loving husband, father and soon-to-be grandfather, a cancer survivor, a mentor, a confidante and a friend to many. He has repeatedly placed his family, community and profession before his own needs,; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby acknowledge and congratulate Chief Richard Smokey Dyer, and offer support and thanks for his service to Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Chief Richard Smokey Dyer with the congratulations and acknowledgement of the Mayor and Council for his successful contributions to our City.
