RESOLUTION NO. 100244

Honoring the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee on their outstanding job for Kansas City’s 37th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17, 2010.

WHEREAS, the modern Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade dates back to 1973 but the Parade’s history dates back 100 years before that from 1873 to 1891; and

WHEREAS, the first parade in 1873 started at St. Patrick’s Church at 7th and Cherry and proceeded down the street gathering more participants with every block; and

WHEREAS, in the early years, the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration was a daylong event and the Irish staged bigger and grander parades with the Grant Marshal being akin to being mayor for a day; and

WHEREAS, in 1891, the parades ceased as the Irish advanced politically and financially and their attentions broadened and their neighborhoods shifted; and

WHEREAS, in 1973, a group of friends met at Hogerty’s Cocktail Lounge and decided a downtown parade was just what the City needed and so it began again and has continued since; and

WHEREAS, the parade has grown over the years with the Parade this year containing over 120 floats and entries, covering a 1.3 mile course through Kansas City’s traditionally Irish neighborhoods in the Midtown/Westport area; and

WHEREAS, the Parade is the City’s largest single-day civic event drawing tens of thousands of spectators who not only celebrate the Irish heritage, but also support Kansas City businesses and special honorees; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee on their outstanding job for Kansas City’s 37th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17, 2010; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Jay Burrus and Kevin Bundy, Co-Chairs of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, with the congratulations of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the exceptional service they have performed for their community.
