RESOLUTION NO. 100123

 

Congratulating Post 149 on celebrating its 90th anniversary.

 

WHEREAS, during the week of February 7-13, 2010, Post 149 will celebrate its 90th anniversary beginning with participation in Sunday church services on February 7, attending the showing of the movie “African American Heroes, True stories of patriotism and valor” on Wednesday, February 10, and having a celebration dinner at the Disabled American Veterans Hall on Saturday, February 13; and

 

WHEREAS, the American Legion was conceived in Paris, France, and had its birth in St. Louis, Missouri in March 1919; and

 

WHEREAS, in September 1919, Wayne Miner Post was organized in Kansas City, Missouri and recognized by the American Legion as Post 149 which received its charter on August 29, 1920, with 21 charter members; and

 

WHEREAS, American Legion Post 149 is named in honor of Private Wayne Miner who enlisted in the U.S. Army in Kansas City, Missouri on October 26, 1917, and served with the all-African American 92nd Division in France before being killed in action three hours before World War I ended; and

WHEREAS, Post 149 was organized 90 years ago. Legionaries’ have served as pall bearers at funerals of Comrades, comforters to widowers, children and relatives of deceased Comrades and in 1962, supported the Housing Authority of Kansas City, Missouri’s apartment development on 12th & Vine in honor of Private Wayne Miner; and

 

WHEREAS, Post 149 sponsored more than 100 boys to American Legion Boy’s State and supported high school ROTC programs; and

 

WHEREAS, Post 149 is one of the oldest posts in the American Legion and one of the largest predominately African American posts in the Department of Missouri; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Post 149 on celebrating its 90th anniversary; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Officers of American Legion Wayne Miner Post 149 in appreciation by the Mayor and Council for the many services provided by Post 149 to the community.
