WHEREAS pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers and is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States, anticipated to move to the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S by 2020, and the only major cancer with a single digit five-year relative survival rate of only 6%; and

WHEREAS, when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is late stage and 74 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year, with 800 deaths in Missouri in 2012;  and

WHEREAS, the Federal Government invests significantly less money in pancreatic research than it does in any other leading cancer killers; a figure far too low given the severity of the disease  and its mortality rate; and

WHEREAS, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the national organization serving the pancreatic cancer community in Kansas City through a comprehensive approach; and

WHEREAS, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and its affiliate in Kansas City support those currently battling pancreatic cancer, as well as those who have lost their lives  to the disease and are committed to nothing less than a cure; and

WHEREAS. the good health and well-being of the residents of Kansas City are enhanced as a direct result of increased awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early detection, causes, and effective treatments; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council designate the month of November 2012 as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month” in Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy thereof be present to Wynne Begun, Representative of the Pancreatic Action Network, Kansas City Affiliate, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the dedication and hard work being done to eliminate pancreatic cancer in the community.
