RESOLUTION NO. 050585

 

Urging the City Manager to identify funding to develop a Summer Youth Employment Program for in-school Kansas City youth 14 to 18 years of age.

 

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri recognizes the importance of educating young people and of creating an enabling environment that will promote youth employment; and

 

WHEREAS, unemployment concentrated among the young exacts a current loss of valuable resources and extends the loss on human capital investment well into the future; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri supports initiatives designed to equip youth with meaningful skills, training and work experience related to local economic conditions and manpower needs; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri recognizes that young people are an asset for sustainable economic growth and social development and expresses a deep concern about the magnitude of youth unemployment and underemployment in our community and its profound implications for the future of our society; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri recalls its historical commitments relating to youth employment; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri reaffirms its commitment to develop and implement strategies that give our local young people a real chance to find decent and productive work; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council urge the City Manager to identify funding to develop a Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) for in-school Kansas City, Missouri, youth 14 to 18 years of age.
