RESOLUTION NO. 120714

 

Declaring Saturday, August 3, 2012, as Center City Community Orchard Day.

 

WHEREAS, since 2002, Timberland PRO and SkillsUSA have partnered together to engage more than 8,000 students, advisors and alumni who have worked over 40,000 total hours improving the greater Kansas City metropolitan community; and

 

WHEREAS, all Timberland Pro and SkillsUSA projects are developed according to the G.R.E.E.N. standard, which focuses on finding grassroots organizations committed to sustainability, reusing and recycling materials, engaging relative stakeholders, educating participants and forwarding Timberland’s goal of carbon neutrality; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Water Services Department, the Parks and Recreation Department,  and City Forestry Department have dedicated resources to the Center City Orchard Project; and

 

WHEREAS, the Center City Neighborhood has partnered with the 225 Timberland Pro / SkillsUSA volunteers to develop a community orchard encompassing 98 fruit trees for the betterment and long term health of the citizens of Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS,  the Center City Orchard Project is anticipated to produce in excess of $500,000.00 worth of free apples, peaches, pears, plumbs, apricots, nectarines and cherries over the lifetime of the orchard to the community; and

 

WHEREAS, St. Mark’s Hope and Peace Lutheran Church, Lowe’s Home Improvement, GTIP LLC, MKS Pipe and Valve Company, and the Society of St. Andrew have provided critical logistics and development resources to the Center City Orchard Project; and

 

WHEREAS, the neighborhood members and families have donated hundreds of volunteer hours already and pledge their continued involvement in the watering, care and future harvesting of orchard; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare Saturday, August 3, 2012, as Center City Community Orchard Day; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Eddie Tapper with the best wishes of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for success in the project.
