RESOLUTION NO. 100898

 

Declaring October 20, 2010, as World Statistics Day in Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly has designated October 20, 2010, as the first-ever World Statistics Day to highlight the role of official statistics and the many achievements of national statistical systems; and

 

WHEREAS, the U.S. government has a long history of collecting statistics about the nation’s people, economy and society beginning with the first national census in 1790; and

 

WHEREAS, the U.S. Census Bureau, along with the 14 leading federal statistical agencies will participate at an event titled “National Statistics: Sound Science, Sound Policy, Strong Democracy” to be held in Washington, D.C. on October 20; and

 

WHEREAS, today, 14 federal agencies collect or publish the statistics the nation uses to record progress and plan for the future; and

 

WHEREAS, 310 million is the estimated current U.S. population, with 300 million being reached in 2006, 200 million in 1967 and 100 million in 1915 and when our nation achieved independence in 1776, there was a population of only 2.5 million; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare October 20, 2010, as World Statistics Day in Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Dennis Johnson, Regional Director, U.S. Census Bureau, and Linda Trout, Executive Director, International Relations Council, in appreciation by the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the many contributions to our nation by its statisticians.
