RESOLUTION NO. 051239
Honoring
the Jackson County Advocate newspaper for more than 50 years of publication in
the Kansas City area.
WHEREAS, the Jackson
County Advocate published its first newspaper on January 15, 1953, and has been
a fixture in South Kansas City for over 50 years; and
WHEREAS, founder,
James D. Turnbaugh, Jr., carried on a family tradition of journalistic service
that has spanned 100 years in Missouri and 80 years in Kansas City; and
WHEREAS, his father
was for 25 years City Editor of the Kansas City Times before his retirement in
1965 and his death in 1970; and
WHEREAS, Agnes Anne
Turnbaugh joined her husband in marriage on September 17, 1953, and within the
first year of their marriage quit her job as a teacher at the Raytown School
District and joined her husband as co-publisher of the Jackson County Advocate;
and
WHEREAS, for many
years Agnes Anne Turnbaugh has written a weekly column called Just Talkin;
and
WHEREAS, two children
were born of this marriage, Annette Marie Turnbaugh and Joseph DeMitt
Turnbaugh; and
WHEREAS, both
children have worked for the Jackson County Advocate with Annette being a
photo-journalist and an account executive and her brother, Joseph being in
charge of the papers mailing crew and much of the sports coverage and
photography; and
WHEREAS, the Jackson
County Advocate ceased publication with its last issue being released on
September 22, 2005; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and
Council hereby honor the Jackson County Advocate newspaper for more than 50
years of publication in the Kansas City area; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in
testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Agnes Anne Turnbaugh
in token of the high regard and esteem with which she is held by the Mayor,
Council and citizens of Kansas City.
