Declaring February 22-February
28, 2021, as Eating Disorder Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City,
Missouri.
WHEREAS, this
year’s theme for Eating Disorder Awareness Week, “Every Body Has a Seat at the
Table” with the goal to shine the spotlight
on eating disorders by educating the public, spreading a message of hope, and
putting lifesaving resources into the hands of those in need; and
WHEREAS, this
year’s theme recognizes that marginalized communities continue to be
underrepresented, and welcomes conversations on raising awareness, challenging
systematic biases, and sharing stories from all backgrounds and experiences;
and
WHEREAS, eating
disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that affect
30 million Americans at some point in their lives no matter their gender, age,
race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, body shape or weight; and
WHEREAS, due to
COVID-19, common strategies and resources used to combat eating disorders are
limited because of social distancing and other COVID-19 guidelines, resulting
in an increase anxiety levels of individuals who suffer from eating disorders;
and
WHEREAS, eating
disorders are serious, potentially life-threatening conditions that affect a
person’s emotional and physical health and the chances for recovery increases
the earlier an eating disorder is detected; and
WHEREAS, through
awareness we encourage those suffering from an eating disorder to seek support,
treatment, and care from our local resources; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor
and Council hereby declare February 22 – February 28, 2021, as Eating Disorder
Awareness Week throughout the City of Kansas City, Missouri; and
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in
testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Amanda Dietz
representing the Eating Disorders Center at
Children's Mercy for their outpatient services to children, adolescents, and young
adults using a family-based approach with the gratitude of the
Mayor and Council and encouraging all citizens to increase awareness,
education, and services for eating disorders which impact millions of people
each year.
