RESOLUTION NO. 960513

 

Declaring May, 1996, as Stroke Month.

 

WHEREAS, stroke is a cardiovascular disease that interrupts the blood flow from the heart to the brain; and

 

WHEREAS, stroke tremendously impacts thousands of Missourians each year, as it is the fourth leading cause of death among African Americans in Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, most strokes can be prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors such as nutrition, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and physical inactivity; and

 

WHEREAS, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Control addresses the disparities and health care needs among the elderly, economically disadvantaged and ethnic minorities in the areas of stroke and its risk factors through the Missouri Stroke Prevention Program; and

 

WHEREAS, the Missouri Stroke Prevention Program, giving special emphasis to minority, elderly and other special populations, assists Samuel Rodgers Community Health Center, Kansas City Health Department, the Black Health Care Coalition, the East Meyer Community Association and other health care providers, to implement programs to deliver appropriate care and patient education; and

 

WHEREAS, the Missouri Stroke Prevention Program, in partnership with DuPont Pharmaceutical, is increasing the awareness of cardiovascular disease and stroke by encouraging healthy lifestyle modification; and

 

WHEREAS, the Missouri Department of Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Control, the Missouri Stroke Prevention Program and the American Heart Association are working cooperatively to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease and stroke in Missouri; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May, 1996, as Stroke Month; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Angelia Weaver and Dwayne Weaver in appreciation of their dedication in increasing the awareness of cardiovascular disease.
