RESOLUTION NO. 080196
Honoring
George E. Hicks for his lifetime of civic service to the community and for his
service on the Silver Haired City Council, the Neighborhood Tourist Development
Fund Committee and the Municipal Judicial Nominating Committee.
WHEREAS,
George E. Hicks grew up in the Central High School district and attended Kansas
City University and was involved in its transition to UMKC where he graduated
in the Class of 1942; and
WHEREAS,
George has been a member of the Kansas City, Missouri Silver Haired City Council
for four years and served on the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund Committee
and was a member of the Municipal Judicial Nominating Committee; and
WHEREAS,
George has devoted many years of service to the metropolitan area by serving as
a board member of the KC Chapter of the American Red Cross, the YMCA, the
Citizens Association, and the Heart of America Eye Center, and as a member of the
Missouri Historical Society and the Heritage League of Greater Kansas City. He
organized the Red Bridge YMCA and was its first chairman, and was a recipient
of the DeMolay Legion of Honor; and
WHEREAS,
George was past president of the Naturalization Council, Native Sons of Greater
Kansas City, 40 Year Ago Club, Pioneer Park Committee, Kessler Society,
Russell-Majors-Waddell National Historic Association, Alexander Majors Chapter
of the Sons of the American Revolution, and was Brotherhood Chairman of the National
Conference of Christians & Jews, and past Commander of American Legion Post
No. 50; and
WHEREAS,
in a unique partnership between the Native Sons of the Greater Kansas City and
the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department, George was the driving force
in a twelve-year Boone-Hayes Park project which is the site of the Boone-Hayes
Cemetery and final resting place of Daniel Morgan Boone, son of pioneer Daniel
Boone and one of the Kansas City areas first settlers; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That
the Mayor and Council hereby honor George E. Hicks for his lifetime of civic
service to the community and especially for his service on the Silver Haired
City Council, the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund Committee and the
Municipal Judicial Nominating Committee; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be
spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy
hereof be presented to George E. Hicks with the appreciation and highest regard
from the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the many ways that he
has served the community over the years.
