RESOLUTION NO. 100871

 

Honoring the late Edgar Snow and declaring the week of October 18, 2010, as Edgar Snow Week.

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Snow (July 17, 1905 – February 15, 1972), a native of Kansas City, Missouri, was one of the most notable Western journalists reporting on China in the 1930s; and

 

WHEREAS, Edgar Snow’s notable book Red Star Over China (1937) tells the story of the early years introducing the Chinese Communist movement. He went on to write The Battle for Asia in 1941 and Stalin Must Have Peace in 1947; and

 

WHEREAS , the Edgar Snow Memorial Fund was established in 1982 to foster friendship and understanding among the people of China and the United States in the same spirit which marked the life and works of Edgar Snow; and

 

WHEREAS, the biennial Edgar Snow Symposium (the venue alternates between Kansas City and Beijing) provides a forum for continuing dialogue between scholars and public figures in China and the United States. The symposium also gives people of both countries the opportunity to forge a greater understanding of each country's culture; and

 

WHEREAS, the 14th Edgar Snow Symposium will be held in Kansas City, October 18 – 20, 2010. The Mayor’s Summit of Clean Energy and Green Solutions will be held in conjunction with the Snow Symposium on October 19 and 20. The “Meet the Past: Edgar Snow”, part of a series of historical interviews conducted by Crosby Kemper III, will be performed on October 20, 2010. Along with clean energy and green solutions, this year’s symposium includes discussions on international medical research, culture, education, and entrepreneurship; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the week of October 18, 2010, as Edgar Snow Week; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Edgar Snow Memorial Fund with the Mayor and Council recognizing the important contributions of Edgar Snow to the friendship and understanding between the people of Kansas City and China.
