RESOLUTION NO. 950696

 

Recognizing National Police Week and honoring law enforcement officers.

 

WHEREAS, the Council recognizes National Police Week, which is from May 14, 1995, until May 20, 1995; and

 

WHEREAS, nationwide during 1994, 184 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty; and

 

WHEREAS, 115 Kansas City, Missouri police officers have been killed in the line of duty since the Department's inception in 1874; and

 

WHEREAS, the names of 13,814 law enforcement officers are listed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and

 

WHEREAS, the first officer killed in Kansas City, Missouri, was Martin Hynes who was killed on December 30, 1881, who went to the White House Saloon at 10th and Grand to serve a warrant and was needlessly shot after allowing the suspect time to get his coat and hat; and

 

WHEREAS, most recently, Sergeant Jack Shepley and Officer Stephen Faulkner were killed on December 1, 1992, in the line of duty during the police helicopter crash in the area of 23rd and Topping, Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, the Council honors and commends all those who risk their lives while serving the citizens of Kansas City, Missouri, in order to protect their safety and welfare; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize National Police Week, May 14 through May 20, 1995, and honor all law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty while protecting the safety and welfare of the citizens of Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council and that a copy hereof be presented to Police Chief Steven Bishop in recognition of National Police Week and in honor of those officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and further the Council recognizes and acknowledges those men and women who have committed their lives to the public safety of the citizens of Kansas City, Missouri.
