RESOLUTION NO. 180218

 

Declaring March, 2018, as Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month.

 

WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has approved for inclusion on its National Health Observances calendar each March as "Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month". Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month in March of 2018 with a mission to pro­mote awareness and educate people regarding bleeding disorders, a group of disorders that share the inability to form a proper blood clot; and

 

WHEREAS, improper clotting can be caused by defects in blood components such as platelets and/or clotting proteins, also called clotting factors and if any of them are defec­tive or deficient, blood clotting is affected; a mild, moderate or severe bleeding disorder can result; and

 

WHEREAS, symptoms and characteristics of bleeding disorders are characterized by extended bleeding after injury, surgery, trauma or during menstruation and sometimes the bleeding is spontaneous, without a known or identifiable cause; and

 

WHEREAS, persons with bleeding disorders can suffer joint damage, chronic pain, and en­dure mobility issues due to bleeding episodes; and

 

WHEREAS, thereby ensuring that persons living with bleeding have access to the lifelong care and services needed to pursue the full measure of personal happiness and achieve their greatest potential; and

 

WHEREAS, join Midwest Hemophilia Association during March 2018 for Bleeding Disor­ders Awareness Month and join the Red Tie Challenge at redtiechallenge.org; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare March, 2018, as Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Mark H. Cox, Executive Director of the Midwest Hemophilia Association, with the Mayor and Council urging the citizens of Kansas City to learn more about bleeding disorders.
