RESOLUTION NO. 120364

Celebrating the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day and encouraging all Kansas Citians to take part in activities and celebrations commemorating this day including a “Plastic Bag-Free Day,” co-sponsored by the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7, and Batliner Recycling scheduled for Friday, April 20, 2012.

WHEREAS, April 22, 1970, marked the first Earth Day in which millions of Americans participated in celebrating our planet; and

WHEREAS, it is expected that in 2012, more than one billion people in 192 countries will take part in events and celebrations commemorating Earth Day; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day serves to remind us of the challenges facing our planet and the opportunities to build a healthy and clean environment now and for the future; and

WHEREAS, all citizens are urged to conserve water, energy and preserve our environment for our benefit and for future generations; and

WHEREAS, every person can contribute to preserving planet Earth by taking simple steps such as recycling, carpooling, not polluting, turning off all non-essential lights and electrical appliances, composting organic waste, and similar environmentally friendly actions; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day 2012 can be an opportunity to advance energy efficient initiatives, preserve renewable resources and commit to sustainable development; and

WHEREAS, a healthy Earth represents and reflects the interconnectedness of environmental and economic issues for all communities; and

WHEREAS, every citizen must take action to protect the environment so future generations can enjoy the wonders of our planet; NOW, THEREFORE, 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY: 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor and celebrate the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day; and 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to representatives of the Green Solutions Steering Committee in support of their sustainability efforts.
