RESOLUTION NO. 100051

 

Expressing support for the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the horrendous disaster of January 12, 2010 and urging appropriate support of disaster relief efforts.

 

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake measured at a magnitude of over 7.0 on the Richter scale struck the nation of Haiti, its epicenter just 10 miles from Haitian capital Port-au-Prince; and

 

WHEREAS, aftershocks have measured as high as 5.9 on the Richter scale and the loss of human life may be measured in the tens of thousands; and

 

WHEREAS, the vast majority of the impacted buildings have been destroyed; and

 

WHEREAS, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, with 80% of its population living below the poverty line; and

WHEREAS, the Red Cross and Red Crescent estimate the need for assistance could extend to over 3 million people; and

WHEREAS, the Center for International Disaster Information offers a list of agencies with a long term presence in Haiti affiliated with InterAction, the largest coalition of U.S.-based international nongovernmental organizations focused on the world’s poor and most vulnerable people, that are accepting financial donations to be focused on the most immediate needs of the people of Haiti, such agencies being found at www.cidi.org; and

WHEREAS, the Center for International Disaster Information notes that clothing contributions are at this time not a preferred choice for humanitarian aid; and

WHEREAS, the First Haitian Baptist Church is a major cornerstone of the Haitian community in the Kansas City area and is collecting items for donation to the relief effort and Jean Benito Mercier, Chairman of the Haitian Community Center of the Midwest, serves as a contact for the Haitian community; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City extend their most sincere condolences to the people of Haiti and the victims of this horrendous disaster; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Commissioner Ginette Marie Pittman, representative of Haiti on the Kansas City Ethnic Enrichment Commission, with the Mayor and Council urging all people of good will to find a meaningful way to transform their care and concern into tangible assistance for the people of Haiti.
