ORDINANCE NO. 140276

 

Approving the Kansas City Register nomination for the “Poage-Arnold Residence” located at 9550 N.E. Cookingham Drive as required by Chapter 88-580-01-B of the Administrative Code of the City of Kansas City, Missouri. (250-S-121)

 

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

Section 1. That the Poage-Arnold Residence located at 9550 N.E. Cookingham Drive is hereby designated for inclusion in the Kansas City Register of Historic Places (H/O Overlay).

 

Section 2. That the location is more specifically described as follows:

 

Beginning at the northwest corner Lot 14, The Estates at Barrington Woods then Westerly in a line parallel to the south line of Lot 1 Lot A Barrington Ridge 2nd Plat 100 Feet Then Northerly at a 90 degree angle to said line 18 Feet then Westerly at a 90 Degree angle 44 Feet then Southerly at a 90 Degree Angle 173 Feet to the Right of Way of N.E. Cookingham Drive then Easterly to the Southwest corner of Lot 14, The Estates at Barrington Woods then Northerly to the Point of Beginning.

 

Section 3. That the Historic Preservation Commission determined that the “Poage-Arnold Residence is eligible for inclusion in the Kansas City Register under Criterion A in the area of Exploration/Settlement and under Criterion C in the area of Architecture as a rare surviving example of the vernacular Gothic Revival style in the city.

 

Section 4. That the Poage-Arnold house, built in 1824 with additions in 1860 and the 1940s, is a rare example in western Missouri of a vernacular Gothic Revival brick masonry farm house.

 

Section 5. That the house built by Andrew and Nancy Poage, and subsequently purchased and expanded by Thomas and Martha Arnold, represents a rare surviving example of a house of early pioneers that contributed to the growth of Clay County and to the Little Shoal Creek Valley.

 

Section 6. Therefore, the City Council approves the nomination of the “Poage-Arnold Residence,” located at 9550 N.E. Cookingham Drive, for inclusion in the Kansas City Register of Historic Places.
