COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR RESOLUTION NO. 160929

 

Recognizing the role of the American Jazz Museum in maintaining the cultural history of Kansas City and accepting two positions on the board of directors of the American Jazz Museum, Inc.

 

WHEREAS, the American Jazz Museum was established in 1997 to celebrate and exhibit the experience of jazz as an original American art form through research, exhibition, education and performance; and

 

WHEREAS, the American Jazz Museum is the only museum in the world solely focused on the preservation, exhibition and advancement of jazz; and

 

WHEREAS, the American Jazz Museum is dedicated to public service and collaborative efforts to expand the influence, awareness and appreciation of jazz within Kansas City and to audiences worldwide; and

 

WHEREAS, the American Jazz Museum believes a closer relationship with the City of Kansas City could provide more direct involvement in its efforts to preserve this cultural heritage and to share its resources with visitors to the City; and

 

WHEREAS, the American Jazz Museum has amended its by-laws to reserve two positions on the board of directors of the American Jazz Museum, Inc. for two representatives of the City who may be members of the City Council or employees of the City, to be appointed by the Mayor; and

 

WHEREAS, the City wishes to formalize its involvement with the American Jazz Museum by participating on its board of directors, NOW, THEREFORE

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

Section 1. That the City of Kansas City recognizes the appropriateness of more closely working with the American Jazz Museum, Inc. by placing two City representatives on the board of directors of the organization.

 

Section 2. That consistent with §209(a)(3), City Charter, the Mayor will appoint two City members, one of whom will be a member of the City Council representing the district in which the American Jazz Museum is located, and any other elected officials and/or employees, to the board of directors of the American Jazz Museum..

 

Section 3. That this recognition and affiliation with the American Jazz Museum renders the City’s appointees to the board of directors representatives of the City within the meaning of §2-2020(b).
