RESOLUTION NO. 050292

Welcoming students from the James Madison University Alternative Break Program.

WHEREAS, the James Madison University Alternative Break Program is a group of students traveling together and living together in an alcohol/drug free service experience; and

WHEREAS, the program is being sponsored by Sheffield Place and working with national and international communities the James Madison University Alternative Break Program trains and immerses students in a purposeful service experience designed to connect students and community members while enhancing personal growth, mutual awareness and life-long learning; and

WHEREAS, the trip consists of twelve students participating in a twelve week leadership training program which also includes a faculty/staff Learning Partner who helps make connections between the service experience and their academic discipline; and

WHEREAS, this alternative program offers a positive alcohol and drug free alternative to students on spring break and connects students with issues and experiences they cannot find on the university campus; and

  WHEREAS, the James Madison University Alternative Break Program is a unique partnership between community service organizations such as Sheffield Place; NOW, THEREFORE,

  BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

  That the Mayor and Council hereby welcome the students from the James Madison University Alternative Break Program; and

  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to students of the James Madison University Alternative Break Program, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the opportunities that have been afforded these students and the many lifelong experiences they have gained.
