COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR ORDINANCE NO. 120533

 

Waiving Section 2-605(b), Code of Ordinances, for the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game Fan Fest that will take place on July 6-10, 2012 at the Kansas City Convention Center (Bartle Hall).

WHEREAS, the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game activities will include, in addition to the All Star Game itself, the MLB Fan Fest (to be held at Bartle Hall in downtown Kansas City), the Futures Game featuring top minor league prospects, the Home Run Derby and Workout Day, the All Star 5K/1K Fun Run, the All Star Red Carpet Show and the All Star Charity Concert; and

WHEREAS, the All Star Game and related activities will allow the public to participate in a unique once-in-a-lifetime All Star experience here in Kansas City, Missouri; and

WHEREAS, the Major League Baseball All Star Game and related activities will result in a world-wide focus upon Kansas City, including the broadcast of the All Star Game to a world-wide television audience; and

WHEREAS, Section 2-605(b), Code of Ordinances, assesses a user fee of $1.50 for each ticket sold at the Kansas City Convention Center; and

WHEREAS, the City believes it is in the City’s best interests to waive the requirements of 2-605(b) due to the financial and other benefits to be obtained by the City because of such waiver; and

WHEREAS, the City believes such actions are necessary for proper promotion of this unique event that is estimated to have a direct/indirect economic impact to the Kansas City area of approximately $50 million; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

Section 1. That the requirements of Section 2-605(b), Code of Ordinances, are hereby waived for the 2012 Major League Baseball All Star Game Fan Fest that will take place on July 6-10, 2012 at the Kansas City Convention Center (Bartle Hall).
