RESOLUTION NO. 150303

 

Honoring the life of C. Stephen Metzler.

 

WHEREAS, C. Stephen Metzler was born on October 29, 1948, died on March 24, 2015, and served and contributed to the community throughout his life; and

 

WHEREAS, he worked for his father’s company, R.J. Metzler & Co. Insurance, and became President in 1991 until the 2013 merger with Arthur Gallagher & Co.; and

 

WHEREAS, under his leadership, the company garnered recognition, success, and awards such as Thinking Bigger Magazine’s 25 Under 25 Award and nominations to the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s award for Small Business of the Year; and

 

WHEREAS, organizations such as Kansas City Art Institute, Friends of Alvin Ailey, the Folly Theater and Young Audiences, Mid-America Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and Heartland Men’s Chorus benefited from his leadership and philanthropic support; and

 

WHEREAS, as the HIV/AIDS epidemic began spreading throughout the community and affected friends and their families, the public and media feared involvement and response lagged; and

 

WHEREAS, to respond to those affected, and without resources, he facilitated the first AIDS Walk Kansas City and with his support it thrived for 27 years despite the struggle experienced by organizers of walks across the country; and

 

WHEREAS, Steve followed this accomplishment and formed the AIDS Service Foundation, which each year distributes grants from the Walk to local AIDS service organizations, Kansas City Care Clinic, Save, Inc., Hope Care Center, and Good Samaritan Project; and

 

WHEREAS, Steve impacted Kansas City as a leader, a generous spirit, and a gentle friend to all; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the life of C. Stephen Metzler; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to his family and partner, Brian Williams, with the recognition of the Mayor and Council of the 27th annual AIDS WALK Kansas City, to be held on April 25, 2015 and will coincide with and be known as C. Stephen Metzler Day throughout Kansas City, Missouri.
