RESOLUTION

Honoring the Kansas City Museum in partnership with
the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History for collaborating on the
Smithsonian’s new multiyear collecting initiative, “Latinos and Baseball: In
the Barrios and the Big Leagues.”
WHEREAS, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of
American History is partnering with 10 organizations, including the
Smithsonian’s Latino Center and the National Museum of African American
History and Culture, to carry out the “Latinos and Baseball” initiative; and
WHEREAS, through the lens of baseball, the
initiative will showcase the impact
of Latino communities on American history and culture; and
WHEREAS, since the 1800s, baseball has played a
historical role in American life, and currently provides a means of celebrating
both national and ethnic identities and building communities; and
WHEREAS, Kansas City is proud of its baseball
legacy, its World Series status, and the significant contributions of the
Latino community; and
WHEREAS, sharing Kansas City’s local history and
stories are essential; and
WHEREAS, on Friday, August 12, and Saturday, August
13, 2016, the Kansas City Museum will host special collecting events to
generate interest in the initiative, build on community relationships, record
oral histories, and identify historical objects for the collections of both the
Kansas City Museum and the Smithsonian; and
WHEREAS, these collecting events will launch a local
initiative to partner with additional local cultural institutions to deepen the
interpretation and contributions of Latinos in baseball; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council commend the Smithsonian’s
National Museum of American History in partnership with the Kansas City Museum
for coming together for “Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big
Leagues”; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be
spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy
hereof be presented to the Kansas City Museum and the National Museum of
American History with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of
Kansas City for the efforts being made to preserve, interpret, and share local
history.
