RESOLUTION NO. 180849

Observing November 11 as Veterans Day and honoring those who served in the United States Armed Forces.

WHEREAS, one hundred years ago, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918, World War I came to an end. Since then November 11th has been a national holiday with the purpose of reflecting on the sacrifice made by those in the armed forces past and present; and

WHEREAS, a military veteran is anyone who has served any length of time in any branch of the military. They are brave, disciplined, and selfless; and

WHEREAS, every year, parades and memorials are held but, not enough recognition can be given to the brave men and women who went away from their homes and families to rise to the nation’s call to action; and

WHEREAS, many organizations in KC are saving our veterans every day not just on Veterans Day. We honor those groups who serve our veterans so honorably. Veterans Community Project is an organization that built tiny homes to house homeless veterans. So far, they are housing 13 veterans, and they are in the process of opening the next 18 Tiny Homes for veterans; and

WHEREAS, very often veterans come home to ill treatment and insufficient care and many more struggle with medical or psychological issues due to their service. Honoring this day would only be giving them a fraction of what they deserve; and

WHEREAS, the City Council salutes the women and men who serve in the armed forces along with those who have made the ultimate sacrifice; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby display their gratitude to Veterans in Kansas City, Missouri and recognize Veterans Day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof is presented to Marine Veteran Ronald Thiewes, representing members of the United States Armed Forces and Army Veteran Chris Stout, President of Veterans Community Project, with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens of Kansas City to honor the nation’s veterans.
