RESOLUTION NO. 100504

 

Honoring SPC Troy Yocum and "Hike For Our Heroes" - a 7,000 mile hike across America for military families.

 

WHEREAS, Specialist Troy Yocum was born in Louisville, Kentucky on June 25, 1979. and graduated from Trinity High School in 1997; and

 

WHEREAS, SPC Troy Yocum joined the Army National Guard just days before 9/11 and spent 2 years in the 151st Infantry. After being placed into the Inactive Ready Reserve, SPC Yocum graduated from Yellow Ambulance Medical Service Bureau and worked as a Basic E.M.T. in the National Guard; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2004, SPC Yocum decided that traveling across America was what he wanted and for the next four years traveled over a million miles and went to 48 out of 50 states including Canada and thus was born the idea of hiking across America to raise funds for military families; and

 

WHEREAS, Iraq War Veteran Troy Yocum is hiking 7,000 miles across America, collecting signatures on his Louisville Slugger bat, and playing his drum, hoping to raise over $5 million to help military families in need with Emmie the SuperDog at his side; and

WHEREAS, SPC Yocum took his first step of his 16-month quest on April 17, 2010, and will journey through 30 states and 38 large cities, including Kansas City, Missouri, and average 20 miles a day enduring all seasons; and

 

WHERAS, SPC Yocum and Emmie will be travelling and drumming through Kansas City on June 23 and 24, 2010; and

 

WHEREAS, SPC Yocum will be working with organizations across his 7,000 mile route to plant a tree for every U.S. Soldier (5,298) who gave their life for our freedom during the Iraq and Afghanistan operations; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor SPC Troy Yocum and "Hike For Our Heroes" - a 7,000 mile hike across America for military families; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to SPC Troy Yocum in token of the high esteem with which he is held by the Mayor and Council.
