RESOLUTION NO. 080674

 

Honoring Reverend Dr. Nelson Fuzzy Thompson for his many years of service to the Human Rights Commission of Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Thompson was born December 3, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas and has been a lifelong resident of the Metropolitan Kansas City area; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Thompson graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri, attended Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Science in Education in Jefferson City and St. Paul School of Theology with a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry in Independence, Missouri, and

 

WHEREAS, in 1988, Reverend Thompson was appointed to the original Human Rights Commission by then Mayor Richard Berkeley; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1992, the Human Rights Commission was reconstituted by then Mayor Emanuel Cleaver II and he appointed Reverend Thompson to the New Commission; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1997, Reverend Thompson became Chairman of the Human Rights Commission until 2008; and

 

WHEREAS, since 1984 to the present, Reverend Thompson has been the President of the Greater Kansas City, Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2007, Reverend Thompson was the recipient of the Kindness Award and the SCJ/BMCR Man of the Year Award, he has also received numerous awards and special recognition; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Reverend Dr. Nelson Fuzzy Thompson for his many years of service to the Human Rights Commission; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Reverend Dr. Nelson Fuzzy Thompson with the best wishes of the Mayor and Council for many more years of successful leadership and giving to the community.
