RESOLUTION NO. 051470

 

Declaring December 1, 2005, as World AIDS Day in Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, the HIV/AIDS pandemic has taken the lives of more than 25 million people and is projected to take millions more; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2003, there were an estimated 1,454 persons living with HIV and 1,907 persons with the AIDS virus in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Each year, there are approximately 250 new HIV/AIDS cases reported; and

 

WHEREAS, on World AIDS Day, the City of Kansas City recognizes those who are united to support the individuals, families, and communities affected by this disease, and to renew our commitment to preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, developing and delivering more effective treatments, and finding a cure; and

 

WHEREAS, through their service and dedication, faith-based and volunteer organizations are providing local and global communities with strategies to confront the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

 

WHEREAS, by raising awareness and promoting acceptance of people living with HIV/AIDS, we help improve the lives of millions of people around the world and demonstrate the compassion of our Nation; and

 

WHEREAS, we join the President of the United States and other municipalities and applaud their bold plans to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare December 1, 2004, as World AIDS Day in Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Dr. Rex Archer, Bernard Malone and LaTanya T. Patton with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the dedication and service to making people more aware and promoting acceptance of HIV/AIDS.
