RESOLUTION NO. 060948

 

Expressing the Mayor and Council's appreciation to the members of the Charter Review Commission who served from 2000-2001 and in 2005 for their tireless and successful work on drafting a constitutional new city charter that the voters approved on August 8, 2006.

 

WHEREAS, the Charter Review Commission was established in April 2000 and re-established in February 2005; and

WHEREAS, the Commission was charged with the responsibility of reviewing the current City Charter, enacted in 1925, to determine how changes to the Charter might improve the City's ability to serve its citizens; and

WHEREAS, the Commission undertook a thorough review of the Charter that included community meetings where important issues were explained and information from the citizens of Kansas City received, twelve Commission meetings in 2005 where information was received from a wide variety of persons including elected officials, former mayors and city managers, department directors, and citizen activists; and

 

WHEREAS, the Commission built on the work done by the Commission during 2000-2001 and worked to refine and streamline the proposed new charter even more; and

WHEREAS, the Commission delivered its recommendations for a City Charter to the City Council on July 8, 2005; and

 

WHEREAS, the citizens of Kansas City overwhelmingly supported the new 78-page charter on August 8, 2006 with 65% of the vote and should serve the citizens of Kansas City for the next 80 years, NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council express its sincere appreciation to Terry Ward, Chair of the Charter Review Commission, and to each member of the Commission from 2005: Edie Ballweg, Tom Brown, Frank Ellis, Alice Ellison, Ricardo Herrera, Jack Holland, Pat Jordan, Mary Jo Longstreth, Kelley Martin, Joseph Moreland, Karen Pletz, Dan Porrevecchio, Jim Rice, Phil Snowden, Aggie Stackhaus, Mark Thornhill, Bishop Mark Tolbert, Carolyn Vellar, Mike White, and Calvin Williford for their tireless work for the present and future citizens of Kansas City; to members of the Commission from 2000-2001 who did not serve in 2005; Herb Kohn, Janet Baker and Harold Cullum; and most importantly to Assistant City Attorney Bill Geary for his work on drafting the Commission's work into the new charter.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to the above listed people for their dedication and service to the City.
