RESOLUTION NO. 920492

Supporting the Mayors' March on Washington which will communicate to the Federal government the urgent needs of America's cities and children.

WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council understand the tremendous poverty the people of Kansas City endure and that many residents of Kansas City lack necessary education, health care, housing and other needs; and

WHEREAS, Kansas City has experienced a dramatic reduction in Federal assistance over the past twelve years causing the crisis of the local communities to deepen and making it impossible to fully provide the basic services essential to the health and safety of our citizens; and

WHEREAS, recent developments in the world have made it possible to seriously reduce the military budget and apply the funds to domestic needs; and

WHEREAS, there is a need for urgent action to pressure the Federal government to respond to the needs of Kansas City residents; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Conference of Mayors is planning a demonstration at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. on May 16, 1992 to communicate "the urgent need to place America's cities and children back on the national agenda"; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council support the Mayors' March on Washington and calls upon all city departments and social, religious, labor, industry, business, education, community, civil rights and peace organizations to come together to organize for a large turnout of Kansas Citians for the March.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be forwarded to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National League of Cities and the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities.
