RESOLUTION NO. 060993

 

Designating September 15 October 25, 2006, Hispanic Heritage Month.

 

WHEREAS, National Hispanic Heritage Month will be celebrated from September 15 through October 15, 2006; and

 

WHEREAS, the Greater Kansas City National Hispanic Heritage Committee will present its 23rd Annual Fiesta Hispana on September 16 and 17 in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, at the Barney Allis Plaza with support from the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, to increase understanding, communication, and respect between communities while fostering pride in Hispanic/Latino youths by reaffirming the role of Hispanics in the development of our nation, its history, traditions and values; and

 

WHEREAS, Hispanics have significantly contributed in all aspects of the development of the United States of America and played an important role in the early exploration and settlement of our nation; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City elected officials recognize and support the celebration of Hispanic/Latino cultures and traditions and reaffirms our commitment to eliminate all residues of prejudice and be more receptive to the richness of diverse cultures; and

 

WHEREAS, our City must continue to search out innovative ways in which government and community can work in partnership to ensure that all Americans benefit from resulting improvements; and

 

WHEREAS, a memorial was dedicated at Mt. Washington Forever Cemetery in Independence, Missouri, honoring the founders of Fiesta Hispana, the late Rebecca Jaramillo, Jose Gonzalez and Ninfa Garza for their dedication in promoting the cultural, educational and economic advancement of the Hispanic community; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council do hereby designate September 15 October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month in Kansas City, Missouri; congratulate the Hispanic Heritage Committee on the Memorial in honor of the three founders and its 23rd annual Fiesta Hispana; and, urge all citizens to reflect on the Hispanic heritage of our nation and share in the rich diversity, prosperity and abundance of our great country; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies be presented in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
