RESOLUTION NO. 150583

 

Honoring the 25th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

 

WHEREAS, on July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure the civil rights of people with disabilities; and

 

WHEREAS, this legislation established a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities; and

 

WHEREAS, on July 26, 2015, we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the signing of the ADA; and

 

WHEREAS, expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities occurred by reducing barriers and changing perceptions, and increasing full participation in community life; and

 

WHEREAS, the full promise of the ADA will only be reached if we remain committed to continue our efforts to fully implement the ADA; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the 25th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to The Whole Person and the Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities with the Mayor and Council celebrating and recognizing the progress that has been made by reaffirming the principles of equality and inclusion and recommitting our efforts to reach full ADA compliance.
