RESOLUTION NO. 120784

 

Recognizing Mayor James’ Summer Youth Program – Club KC.

 

WHEREAS, SMART (Students Motivated to Achieve and Resist Truancy) was organized in 1999, and participated in the Club KC Kickoff weekend serving 130 youth over the initial Friday and Saturday and;

 

WHEREAS, K.C. Hoops was founded in 2000,  made more than 2,100 impressions over the eight-week summer program, hosting approximately 1000 junior high school students provided activities that support a fit and healthy lifestyle and maintained a safe, secure site for the young people to socialize and have fun; and

 

WHEREAS, K.C. Hoops provided area youth fun, safe recreational activities, and in environments where they are welcomed, valued, respected and appreciated; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Keys organization was started in served over 4,000 youth alone in an eight week period; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City Keys mission was to provide a safe, drug free atmosphere for Kansas City youth during the evening hours by implementing a structured activity in the evening hours; and

 

WHEREAS, Guadalupe Center was founded in 1919 by the Catholic Women’s Club. The Guadalupe Center became one of the nation’s first social service agencies for Latinos and served over 300 youth during the Club KC Summer Program; and

 

WHEREAS, the Guadalupe Center mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals in the Latino communities of greater Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY;

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the selected vendors for their commitment to practicing keeping the Kansas City youth engaged in safety and fun during the summer of 2012; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to KC Keys, KC Hoops, SMART, and the Guadalupe Center with a congratulations of the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department for the outstanding job they have done in providing a safe environment for Kansas City’s youth, and a special thank you to Carter Broadcasting for partnering with the office of Mayor Sly James.
