ORDINANCE NO. 051070

 

Enacting a new Section 2.9, Code of Ordinances, entitled Official Song designating Kansas City written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller as the Citys official song.

 

WHEREAS, the Goin to Kansas City Plaza is located at Twelfth Street and Vine; and

 

WHEREAS, Goin to Kansas City is acclaimed in the famous song written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, originally titled K. C. Lovin; and

 

WHEREAS, the song, later named Kansas City was popularized by artist Little Willie Littlefield in 1952; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City was recorded by song stylist Wilbert Harrison in 1959 and became a nationwide hit that depicted the corner of Twelfth Street and Vine in Kansas City as a well known destination for travelers; and

 

WHEREAS, the music and lyrics to Kansas City became internationally known when sung by artists Little Richard and the Beatles; and

 

WHEREAS, many tourists who travel to Kansas City each year ask to be taken to visit the corner of Twelfth Street and Vine; NOW, THEREFORE

 

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

Section 1. That a new Section 2.9, Code of Ordinances, entitled Official song is enacted to read as follows:

 

Sec. 2.9. Official song.

 

The song Kansas City written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller is designated as the official song of the City.
