RESOLUTION NO. 160935
Honoring and recognizing William
Geary on his retirement from the Office of the City Attorney after 37 years of
dedicated service to the City.
WHEREAS,
Mr. William (Bill) Geary began his career with the City as an Assistant City
Attorney in 1979, became City Attorney in 2012 and has provided thirty-seven
years of exceptional public service along the way; and
WHEREAS, Bill handled
difficult and novel First Amendment and due process issues, developed expertise
in other substantive areas of law, was the primary drafter of all of the City
Charter revisions over the past three decades, successfully defended the City
against tort claims arising out of the Hyatt Skywalk disaster and drafted the
legislation that created the Metropolitan Ambulance Services Trust that
provided emergency medical care to the citizens of Kansas City for years; and
WHEREAS, Bill has
been awarded both a Lou Czech and James H. Epps III Award for distinguished
service and his work is widely known across the municipal and constitutional
law community to be amongst the highest order, benefiting not only Kansas City,
but often times local governments across the state and nationwide; and
WHEREAS, Bill is a
U.S. Navy veteran of the JAG Corps, is active in the KCMBF Military Matters
program and his church, is a devoted family man, and evidences the highest
standard for professionalism, ethics and leadership in his community; and
WHEREAS, Bill has
counseled the City and its elected officials in an exemplary manner, provided
strong leadership and mentorship to his colleagues, and retires from the City
with the sincere admiration and gratitude from the office’s attorneys and staff
for his friendship and service; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE
COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and
Council hereby extend their most sincere appreciation to Bill Geary for his 37
years of distinguished and exceptional service to Kansas City, together with
heartiest best wishes for the future; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,
that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony
thereof, and that a copy hereof be presented to him in token of the grateful
appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the excellent services and leadership
provided by him to the City, its officers and employees, for so many years.
