RESOLUTION NO. 950672

 

Honoring Rev. J. Earl Cavanaugh on the occasion of his retirement from Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral.

 

WHEREAS, Rev. Cavanaugh led the Cathedral in reshaping and enriching the worship service and maximizing the Book of Common Prayer; and

 

WHEREAS, Rev. Cavanaugh extended participation in the worship ministry of the Cathedral to both women and men at all levels, and advocated and implemented the ordination of women to the presbyterate; and

 

WHEREAS, he encouraged strengthening relationships between his congregation, other Christians and members of the Jewish faith community through joint worship, study and community service; and

 

WHEREAS, Rev. Cavanaugh has been involved publicly and pastorally in the AIDS epidemic from the beginning of that crisis, and provided vision and support for growing human needs and suffering by giving energy, involvement and endorsement to both cathedral and community efforts; and

 

WHEREAS, he has been dedicated to the larger ministry of the Episcopal Church through work of the General Convention, Committee on the State of the Church, Council of Advice to the President of the House of Deputies, and the Executive Council; and

 

WHEREAS, Rev. Cavanaugh has provided leadership through the rebuilding and renovation of the nave following the structural collapse in l986; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council do hereby honor the Rev. J. Earl Cavanaugh on the occasion of his retirement from Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and a copy be presented to him wishing him the best of luck in the years to come.
