RESOLUTION NO. 970543

Declaring April 24, 1997, as "The Fifth Annual Take Our Daughters to Work Day".

WHEREAS, Take Our Daughters to Work Day is held on the fourth Thursday of every April; and

WHEREAS, the fifth Take Our Daughters to Work falls on April 24, 1997; and

WHEREAS, Take our Daughters to Work Day was originated by the Ms. Foundation for Women, which is a national, multi-issue, public women's fund that supports the efforts of women and girls to govern their own lives and influence the world around them; and

WHEREAS, research shows that during adolescence girls show a drop in self-esteem, tend to like or dislike themselves based on aspects of their physical appearance, report a lowered sense of self-worth, and often receive less attention than boys in school and in youth-serving programs; and

WHEREAS, working alongside adult mentors who show positive attention helps keep girls healthy, confident and resilient during adolescence. Take Our Daughters to Work Day prepares girls for leadership roles in the 21st Century and celebrates women's contributions to the workforce and economy; and

WHEREAS, Take Our Daughters to Work also helps girls to become more comfortable in the workplace and more aware of the many opportunities that are now available to them, thereby stimulating their imagination and encouraging their hopes and dreams; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare April 24, 1997, as Take Our Daughters to Work Day and welcomes all young women who are joining the City work force on this special day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Brenda Andrews, Event Chairperson, LaTanya Patton, Chairperson of Women's Group and the Women Associates Group in recognition of the importance of the role of women in the community.
