RESOLUTION NO. 080653

 

Declaring July 2008 as National Recreation and Parks Month in Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners is pleased to recognize July, 2008 as National Recreation and Parks month; and

 

WHEREAS, physical recreation and meaningful leisure experiences contribute to the mental well being as well as the overall quality of life; and

 

WHEREAS, community recreation and leisure opportunities create socially beneficial connections between and among individuals, groups and neighborhoods; and

 

WHEREAS, Parks and Recreation services provide preventive health benefits, serve to support more productive work forces, enhance the desirability of locations for business and families, and stimulate tourism to increase total community economic development; and

 

WHEREAS, recreation programs give at-risk youth and other youth an opportunity to discover healthy interests and strengthen leadership skills in safe environments; and

WHEREAS, recreation and leisure also provide opportunities for all citizens to positively socialize with peers and relieve stress; and

 

WHEREAS, forest open space and wetlands control erosion, help clean the air, mitigate global warming and shelter and cools homes; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare July 2008 as National Recreation and Parks Month in Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHE RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Mark Bowland, Central Region Manager, and Heidi Downer, Marketing Manager, in recognition of the easy access to parks and open space that has become a new measure of community wealth, an important way to attract businesses and residents by guaranteeing both quality of life and economic health.
