RESOLUTION NO. 170381

 

Declaring the week of May 21-27, 2017, as National Public Works Week in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, Public Works services provided in our community are an integral part of our citizens’ everyday lives; and

 

WHEREAS, the support of an understanding and informed citizenry is vital to the efficient operation of public works systems and programs like streets, sidewalks, and various services that support multi-modal transportation; and

 

WHEREAS, the health, safety and comfort of the citizens of Kansas City greatly depends on the services offered by Public Works, whose values can be observed through the department’s SPIRIT acronym- standing for Sustainability, Public Safety, Integrity, Responsiveness, Innovation and Teamwork; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City’s 300 Public Works employees monitor, maintain and repair more than 6,500 lane miles of streets, 560 bridges, 855 traffic signals and 95,000 streetlights, 155,000 signs; and

 

WHEREAS, public works projects, whether building new bicycle facilities, replacing a bridge, or building a brand new streetcar line, all represent the American Public Works Department’s National Public Works Week theme of “Public Works Connects Us”; and

 

WHEREAS, the year 2017 marks the 57th annual National Public Works Week sponsored by the American Public Works Association; and

 

WHEREAS, the quality and effectiveness of these facilities as well as their planning, design and construction are vitally dependent upon the efforts and skill of public works officials; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council here declare the week of May 21-27, 2017, as National Public Works Week in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Public Works Director Sherri McIntyre in token of the Mayor and Council’s respect and high regard for the contribution of the City’s Public Works employees to the continued success of Kansas City.
