RESOLUTION NO. 120260

 

Declaring March 2012, as Irish-American Heritage Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City, Missouri, has the fourth largest percentage share of Irish descent population in the United States, and the largest share west of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City, Missouri, held one of the first St. Patrick’s Day parades in the nation in 1872; and

 

WHEREAS, Father Bernard Donnelly, an Irish-born Catholic priest and civil engineer, settled in the Town of Kansas in 1845 and began a recruitment effort to attract Irish settlers and began carving out the city and roads that would grow into Kansas City; and

 

WHEREAS, the Irish have contributed and sacrificed in many ways in service to Kansas City, including Irish-born Martin Hynes, the first Kansas City police officer, Robert V. Kennedy, Publisher of Kansas City’s first newspaper, and the Browne family, owners of Browne’s Irish Market, which is the oldest Irish-owned business in North America, founded in 1887 in the heart of the City; and

 

WHEREAS, Irish entrepreneurs since the 1850’s have started and grown businesses and today continue to provide civic and business leadership, with a particular nod to Irish-women business owners exemplified by Ellen Quinlan, who would employ thousands of dressmakers at Nelly Don, Inc.; and

 

WHEREAS, the Irish in Kansas City today provide us with a St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Irish Festival, and the Irish Museum and Cultural Center that are among the finest in the United States, promoting a joyful and positive image for both those direct ancestors of brave Irish men and women and all Kansas City residents; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare March 2012, as Irish-American Heritage Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Ancient Order of Hibernians Father Bernard Donnelly Division 1, Ancient Order of Hibernians Padraig Pearse  Division 1, Kansas City Irish Festival, Kansas City St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, and Kansas City Irish Museum and Cultural Center with the Mayor and Council urging all citizens of Kansas City, Missouri and surrounding areas to welcome the invitation to be Irish for a day on March 17th and to celebrate all things Irish this month.
